Why might a fitness for work assessment be needed?
There are many reasons why a fitness for work assessment might be required. An employee’s health condition may be hindering their ability to perform tasks at work or be made worse by the job. Someone might be about to join the organisation, and you might need to understand how you can accommodate any health conditions. There may be certain roles that could be unsafe for them or others to do. Or the individual may have a condition that could pose a risk to the community. Who should carry out a fitness for work assessment?
Fitness for work assessments should be carried out by qualified occupational health professionals. They can consider both the employee’s medical history and current health statements against the specific requirements of the job. The overall aim is to identify any health risks or limitations that may impact the individual’s ability to work safely. The purpose is not to exclude the individual from work, but rather to identify any reasonable adjustments that might be required to support them to remain in work. Employers have a legal right to consider and implement these recommendations, where it is practically reasonable to do so.
What happens during a fitness for work assessment?
The fitness for work assessor will review the employee’s medical history and may carry out functional assessments to evaluate the employee’s ability to meet the demands of their role. A physical examination may also be carried out to assess overall health, including cardiovascular, respiratory and musculoskeletal (MSK) systems. In some cases, a psychological assessment to evaluate the employee’s mental health may also be carried out. Following the fitness for work assessment, the occupational health professional will provide a report with their findings and recommendations. The assessment must be carried out in a way that respects the individual’s right to confidentiality. Medical information should only be shared with those who have a legitimate need to know.
