What is an Occupational Health Assessment?

An occupational health assessment is a confidential, independent medical evaluation carried out by a qualified clinician. Its purpose is to understand how an employee’s physical or mental health may be affecting their ability to do their job — and to offer guidance on how best to support them.

Assessments are often used when an employee is off sick, struggling at work, or returning after a period of absence. They are particularly valuable in identifying whether an employee is fit for work, whether any temporary or long-term adjustments are needed, and what support will aid their recovery and performance.

As part of the process, the clinician may recommend reasonable adjustments at work — such as changes to hours, duties, equipment or environment — to help the employee remain in or return to work safely. Recommendations are shared with the employer in a clear, actionable report that balances the needs of the individual and the business.

At PAM Group, our occupational health professionals work closely with HR and line managers to ensure every assessment is handled with care, professionalism, and full compliance with UK employment and equality law.

Why occupational health assessments benefit your business and your people

Occupational health assessments support staff wellbeing and help employers make informed, fair decisions.

Informed decision-making

An occupational health assessment gives managers and HR clear, clinical advice they can act on. This ensures decisions around absence, adjustments or return to work are fair, consistent and based on medical insight — protecting both the employee and the organisation.

Supportive, person-centred advice

Every assessment is focused on the individual. Our clinicians provide practical, compassionate recommendations that consider both the employee’s health and the demands of their role — helping them feel supported and valued at every stage of their working life.

Legal compliance and risk reduction

Occupational health input helps you meet your duty of care and comply with employment law. From fit notes to reasonable adjustments, the process helps protect against claims of unfair treatment or discrimination — and ensures proper documentation is in place.

Understand whether an employee is medically fit to carry out their role, with or without adjustments. Our clinicians assess both physical and mental health factors, considering job demands and working conditions. You’ll receive a clear report with advice on fitness, support needs, and any next steps.

When someone is off work due to illness or injury, we provide timely, professional input. Our assessment helps determine if the absence is likely to continue, whether recovery is progressing, and how to manage a safe return, reducing the risk of long-term absence or relapses.

We support structured returns after absence, including phased return plans, rehabilitation advice, and workplace adjustment guidance. By involving occupational health early, you can build a return-to-work process that supports recovery and ensures long-term success for both the employee and business.

Our assessments include expert advice on what adjustments could help an employee stay in work or return safely. From flexible hours to specialist equipment or role changes, recommendations are tailored and legally informed, helping you meet your obligations under the Equality Act 2010.

We support managers in making appropriate, timely referrals to occupational health. We’ll help them ask the right questions and interpret the outcomes, with optional consultations to discuss complex cases. This builds confidence, reduces risks, and improves support for your team.
