Health surveillance
Optimise your approach to health surveillance
Ensure your health and safety controls are working with health surveillance to identify any work-related ill health early on. We cover all risks legislated under the Health & Safety at Work Act, including hazardous substances, noise, vibration and night working. Our experienced health surveillance team can carry out checks at our clinics or using a mobile clinic at your site. After taking a baseline measure, we schedule future appointments so you’re not wasting spend with over surveillance or increasing risk with under surveillance.

Why is health surveillance important?

By helping you to detect problems early on, our health surveillance service can help you to achieve the following.

Avoid legal penalties

By helping you to increase the number of people attending health surveillance, we can help you comply with your HSE legal obligations to maintain a safe workplace. Compliance with these regulations helps avoid legal penalties and ensures a safe working environment.

Detect health issues

Regular health surveillance helps identify health problems before they become serious. This allows employees to get timely intervention and treatment, to reduce the risk of long-term health issues. This helps to reduce the risk of sickness absence and boost fitness for work.

Improve health & safety

We share valuable health surveillance data with you, to help you evaluate health risks and identify lapses in workplace controls. This can then be used to guide improvements and improve the effectiveness of health and safety measures and create a safer workplace.

OUR APPROACH

Key features of our approach to health surveillance

Health surveillance reporting
Continuous reporting provides oversight of compliance and the schedule of assessments. The employees’ health surveillance journey can also start at the pre-placement stage. We assess their fitness to work, in line with the specific risks associated with their job.
Our managed health surveillance and fitness for work programmes use an ISO27001 accredited system. This enables us to track the employees’ health surveillance journey and automatically schedule appointments to comply with statutory requirements.

We offer a flexible delivery model, including working onsite to reduce downtime and optimise attendance. We can also help you incentivise managers to support employees to attend, to reduce wasted spend on unattended appointments.

We can also provide training and education to employees and managers on health and safety practices and the importance of these practices. This can help to raise awareness of workplace hazards and change behaviour to create a culture of health.

Fitness for work services

Do you need to assess someone’s fitness for work safely and effectively? Whether they are about to join, returning from an illness or a safety critical worker, we can help.

Fit4jobs & Pre-placement screening

Pre-placement screening

Comply with health and safety regulations and look after employees from the moment they join your organisation with pre-placement screening. Our secure online platform, Fit4Jobs, is compliant with the Equality Act and can help you recognise any potential health risks when recruiting.

Safety critical medicals

Safety critical workers have jobs that if not performed correctly could lead to serious harm to others. Our experienced team can help you avoid accidents and injury. We provide safety critical medicals across all sectors, including transport, blue light, construction, oil, gas and utilities

Alcohol and drugs testing

Misuse of drugs and alcohol can increase the risk of accidents. We offer ‘for cause’, random and post-incident testing. Trained collection officers take saliva, sweat, urine or breath tests as required, to ensure legally defensible results. Negative results can be confirmed immediately on collection.

Fitness for work frequently asked questions

There are many reasons why a fitness for work assessment might be required. An employee’s health condition may be hindering their ability to perform tasks at work or be made worse by the job. Someone might be about to join the organisation, and you might need to understand how you can accommodate any health conditions. There may be certain roles that could be unsafe for them or others to do. Or the individual may have a condition that could pose a risk to the community. If you are unsure whether a fitness for work assessment is required, please contact us to find out more.

Fitness for work assessments should be carried out by qualified occupational health professionals. They can consider both the employee’s medical history and current health statements against the specific requirements of the job. The overall aim is to identify any health risks or limitations that may impact the individual’s ability to work safely. The purpose is not to exclude the individual from work, but rather to identify any reasonable adjustments that might be required to support them to remain in work. Employers have a legal right to consider and implement these recommendations, where it is practically reasonable to do so.

The fitness for work assessor will review the employee’s medical history and may carry out functional assessments to evaluate the employee’s ability to meet the demands of their role. A physical examination may also be carried out to assess overall health, including cardiovascular, respiratory and musculoskeletal (MSK) systems. In some cases, a psychological assessment to evaluate the employee’s mental health may also be carried out. Following the fitness for work assessment, the occupational health professional will provide a report with their findings and recommendations. The assessment must be carried out in a way that respects the individual’s right to confidentiality. Medical information should only be shared with those who have a legitimate need to know.
